Every pattern starts with its own number, then it goes up as people look at it: +3 each time someone opens it, +100 each time someone downloads it. The same person opening it again counts again. Numbers over 1,000 are shortened (1,234 shows as 1.2k). The figure you see refreshes a few times a day, so it won't tick up while you're browsing.

On a pattern page you're seeing the number from before you arrived — your own visit shows up the next time you drop by. It updates within a few seconds of a visit, so two people looking at the same moment might briefly see slightly different numbers.
